Racist Dove Ad?

A picture is worth a thousand words:

I don't know what the point of this ad was supposed to be, but it looks like Dove is suggesting that their product makes women skinnier and whiter. Is it better to be skinny? Is it better to be white? Yikes! No matter the intended message of this ad, it just looks  And that's to say the least. It might be a good idea to have a diverse team look over these ads before they are published for the world to see.

  1. Hi Sara and Brian,
I read your post on the Dove ad. I don’t think Dove’s intention was to suggest that their product is supposed to change people’s skin tones or body shape, but their ad team definitely needs media sensitivity training because they failed to catch how the arrangement of the models might be interpreted as it was by critics. Part of this might be they just didn’t see it and part of it might be that the team lacks diversity as you suggest. I wanted to share this video on the Dove ad with you. I think you’ll appreciate how it analyzes news coverage from different sources to show various perspectives on the ad and whether it’s racist or insensitive. I hope you’ll considering embedding the video in your post.
